Sitting out in the beautiful garden at The Stone House, the owner of the handsome home watches the pheasants, green woodpeckers, hedgehogs and squirrels.
She has even caught sight of the occasional barking deer at her country home at Lavendon.
It was the location I first loved more than anything, she said, recalling the first time she saw the property. The house as tucked away down a quiet lane. It overlooked fields and beautiful trees, and felt very private.
Being developed on the site of a former Dutch barn, to a high specification by a well-known local builder, there was little to see during that first visit.
It was just a shell really but, because it was at an early stage, we were able to have input over the layout, choice of tiles and how the garden was arranged.


Country style


The idea, she continued, was to give the stone-built property an interior that was in keeping with its countryside location.
I wanted it to feel like a country cottage in some ways but to be modern and bright in others, she explained.
The result is a home that has a clean, stylish finish, and which also features natural wood and soft colours.
It was important that the rooms were bright and airy, and good for family living, she said.


Amazing views


Since moving in, we have added solid wood floors, and have had the loft converted to create a large bedroom and a bathroom, which has Villeroy & Boch pieces and a spa bath, she said.
This is lovely and has really opened the space up for us. There are the most amazing views from up here, both to the front and the back.
The master bedroom is also a spacious room, and features an en suite bathroom and built-in wardrobes. There are three other bedrooms and another bathroom.
This works well as a family home, both upstairs and down, she added.


Family living


On the ground floor, the reception hall can almost be treated as another room. Indeed, this is where the children used to play when they were young.
The kitchen breakfast room is a good size and is where you can entertain friends or the children can sit and do their homework, she said. This is a wonderful house for family gatherings. The teenagers like it too as they can have big sleepovers up in the loft.
As well as the garden, there is a piece of land opposite belonging to the owners. Here the children play football, bounce on the trampoline and sometimes camp.
It a wonderful area for them to burn off excess energy and have fun with their friends, she said. The adults can leave them over there while they relax in the sunshine in the back garden, enjoying a barbecue and a few glasses of wine.


Through the years


Within easy reach of Bedford, Northampton and Milton Keynes, the house is also close to a local shop, Post Office and school. There are stables close by where the owners have kept a horse.
My daughter can go out on rides across beautiful countryside from there, she said.
And she added: We will miss this location when we go - it is like our very own little piece of heaven.
Having been here for all this time, we see something different and special each season; in spring there are all the daffodils and baby animals in summer the garden becomes a tranquil relaxing sun trap and in autumn there are all the conkers as well as the harvests out in the fields.
In winter, when it snows, it is like a wonderland. Everything is white and the children go sledging down the lane.
